The Jersey government has not yet made a decision regarding the inclusion of King Charles III's portrait on new banknotes, citing a significant existing stock of currency featuring the late Queen Elizabeth II. Banknotes featuring King Charles III began circulating in June 2024, and discussions have considered the possibility of introducing new notes for Jersey. However, Deputy Elaine Millar indicated that due to ample quantities of current Queen Elizabeth II notes, no immediate plans have been finalized for new currency or its design.
Millar emphasized that this cautious approach aims to prevent unnecessary expenses and ensure cost-effectiveness on behalf of the public. In response to a query from Deputy Helen Miles regarding a potential timeline for new notes and coins featuring King Charles III, Millar explained that the need for large minimum print runs in Jersey's smaller jurisdiction necessitates careful consideration.
Historically, Jersey's banknotes have been updated twice in the past 36 years—in 1989 and 2010. In April, the States of Guernsey announced their decision not to include King Charles III's portrait on updated currency for the island. Millar reiterated that while discussions about introducing a new series of notes have taken place, the current abundance of Queen Elizabeth II notes means that it will take some time before a final decision is made regarding the necessity for a new family of notes and which design options might be preferred.
