Japan’s military announced on Tuesday that it had carried out a missile test on its own soil for the first time.
The Ground Self-Defense Force launched a Type-88 surface-to-ship short-range missile at the Shizunai Anti-Air Firing Range, located on Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost main island.
Approximately 300 troops from the 1st Artillery Brigade participated in the exercise, targeting an unmanned vessel located around 40 kilometers (24 miles) off Hokkaido’s southern coast, according to officials.
Authorities are still analyzing the outcome of the test.
This marks a significant step in Japan’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities, particularly as it moves toward developing strike-back options to deter potential threats from China.
The country also plans to begin deploying long-range cruise missiles, such as U.S.-made Tomahawks, later this year.
Until now, Japan has conducted missile tests abroad in collaboration with its defense allies, including the United States and Australia.
