A New York City police officer who tragically lost his life in a mass shooting has been identified as 36-year-old Didarul Islam. Originally from Bangladesh, Officer Islam had served with the NYPD for three and a half years. He was also a devoted husband and father, with his wife currently expecting their second child. At the time of the incident, he was working a second job as a security guard at 345 Park Avenue, where he was fatally shot in the back on Monday night.
Despite being quickly transported to a nearby hospital and undergoing emergency surgery, Officer Islam could not be saved. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes across the city.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams paid a heartfelt tribute to Officer Islam in a public statement on Monday night. The mayor described him as a "person of faith" and someone who truly loved New York City. "He was doing what he does best, as all members of the police department do—he was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers," Adams said. “He was an immigrant from Bangladesh, and everyone we spoke with described him as a man of faith, someone who believed in God and lived a life guided by his beliefs.”
The suspect responsible for the deadly attack has been identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura. Authorities say Tamura exchanged gunfire with Officer Islam in the building’s lobby before making his way to the 33rd floor. There, he continued his rampage, resulting in the deaths of at least four people.
According to reports, the NYPD received numerous frantic emergency calls from individuals on the 32nd and 33rd floors. Around 100 people were trapped and hiding in fear. Newly released images from the scene show office workers barricading themselves with sofas and other furniture to shield themselves from danger.
The building was placed on lockdown for several hours as police secured the area. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch later confirmed on social media that the shooter had been neutralized and the situation was under control.
According to NBC News and other media outlets, four senior New York City officials confirmed that the gunman died by suicide. His body was found in a stairwell, alongside a rifle. Investigators believe he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Law enforcement sources revealed to CNN that the gunman had previously held a private investigator’s license, which had expired, and possessed a concealed carry permit for a handgun issued in Las Vegas. His residence in Las Vegas has since been raided by authorities as part of an ongoing investigation into his background and possible motives.
The tragic shooting has shaken the city and highlighted the sacrifices made by officers like Didarul Islam, who served with bravery and dedication both in uniform and off-duty.
