Folk singer Maithili Thakur has created history by winning the Alinagar seat in the Bihar Assembly elections, becoming the youngest MLA in the state at just 25 years old. Her victory marks a significant political debut for the artist, who rose to national fame through her melodious Maithili folk renditions and appearances on reality shows such as Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs and Indian Idol Junior .

Thakur officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 14 October 2025, only weeks before the election, and quickly emerged as one of the party’s most talked-about candidates. Contesting from Alinagar in the Darbhanga district, she faced her main opponent, RJD’s Binod Mishra, in a closely watched race .

According to official results, Thakur secured 84,915 votes, defeating Mishra by a margin of 11,730 votes. After her win, the young MLA expressed gratitude to her supporters, calling the moment “like a dream” and promising to work tirelessly for her constituency. “I will serve my people as their daughter,” she said, emphasizing her commitment to development work and education for girls .

One of her key campaign promises — to rename Alinagar as ‘Sitanagar’ — remains at the forefront of her agenda. Thakur has reiterated that the name change is a reflection of the cultural heritage of her region and a demand supported by many locals .

Her victory is also politically significant, as it marks the first time the BJP has ever won the Alinagar seat since its creation in 2008. Analysts see Thakur’s rise as part of a broader youth wave sweeping Bihar politics, demonstrating the electorate’s growing openness to young and culturally influential leaders .

Maithili Thakur’s entry into the state legislature symbolizes not only a personal milestone but also a generational shift that could reshape Bihar’s political landscape.
