A shocking incident unfolded at the Bangladesh Centre in London on Monday night, involving the country's High Commissioner to the UK, Abida Islam, who was reportedly publicly insulted and engaged in a heated exchange with disruptors. The Metropolitan Police were ultimately called to the premises following the escalating altercation. This type of public discord among members of the London Bangladeshi community, particularly directed at a senior diplomatic representative, has been widely condemned as embarrassing and detrimental to the community’s image as a whole, Daily Dazzling Dawn realized.Questions have been raised regarding the High Commissioner's tactical response to the situation that occurred yesterday. But,the video shows the High Commissioner being surrounded and various accusations being made against her, but she is not allowed to say anything in response to those questions.
"This embarrassing incident has once again brought to the forefront the long-standing conflict over the control of the Bangladesh Centre, a memorial institution and source of pride for Bangladeshis in the UK.
During discussions with the High Commission and the involved parties, it was learned that to resolve the dispute, High Commissioner Abida Islam—who also serves as the Chairman of the Centre and is based at the Bangladesh High Commission in London—called a meeting of the Centre's management committee on Monday (November 17) night at the Centre’s own building in Kensington, North London. She was immediately faced with an embarrassing situation upon arriving at the venue.
The core of the confrontation is understood to be tied to a bitter, long-running factional dispute over the governance and control of the London Bangladesh Centre itself. This highly symbolic hub has been the site of opposing rallies and meetings between the two rival groups for an extended period.
This institution serves Bangladeshi community whose early presence in Britain dates back to the 19th century, highlighting the profound significance of its cultural and administrative stability.
A video clip of Monday night’s incident, See the video from Daily Dazzling Dawn Facebook page which is now circulating rapidly across social media platforms, appears to show a deliberate and calculated attempt to publicly humiliate High Commissioner Abida Islam. As an appointed representative of Bangladesh, and as a woman in a high diplomatic post—she previously served as Ambassador to Mexico and South Korea.
The High Commissioner's office was contacted for comment by a Daily Dazzling Dawn reporter at 10:50 PM on Monday night, but she had not responded to the outreach at the time of publication.
There are various allegations, including different kinds of arbitrariness, including the Centre's governing body election and its management, and the closure of lodging facilities for visitors from Bangladesh to rent out the spaces. The two sides have been locked in a protracted dispute regarding the control of the centre. This meeting had been called by the High Commissioner in an effort to bring an end to that disagreement.
