The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says it is looking into 36 reported cases of children becoming unwell after consuming baby formula that has since been recalled.
Last month, Nestlé withdrew more than 60 batches of its SMA baby formula over concerns they may contain cereulide, a heat-resistant toxin that can trigger symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea. Danone also recalled a single batch of its Aptamil formula.
According to UKHSA, the recall covered both powdered and ready-to-drink formulas for infants and toddlers. The agency confirmed it has received 36 clinical reports of children across the UK showing symptoms consistent with cereulide toxin exposure after drinking the affected products.
UKHSA noted that, given how widely the formulas were available before the recall and the Food Standards Agency’s confirmation that the toxin was present in some batches, the number of cases is “not unexpected.” Investigations into the incidents are continuing.
