A Saudi Arabian university student was killed in a stabbing outside his accommodation near Cambridge Railway Station, a court has been told.
CCTV Footage Captures Incident
On the evening of August 1, 2025, 20-year-old Mohammed Algasim was sitting with friends outside his accommodation when another man approached. High-quality CCTV footage reportedly shows 22-year-old Chas Corrigan walking over in a high-visibility jacket and speaking briefly to Mr Algasim before leaving the area. After a short time, Corrigan returned and an altercation occurred.
Friends of the victim said Mr Algasim was chatting normally when the situation escalated.
Prosecution Describes Attack as “Unprovoked and Senseless”
At Cambridge Crown Court, prosecutor Nicholas Hearn described the events as sudden and without clear reason. He told the court that Corrigan struck Mr Algasim before using a kitchen knife. The wound resulted in serious injury, and Mr Algasim later died.
Prosecutors also said Corrigan had been drinking earlier in the evening and may have taken drugs at a nearby pub. Witnesses said he had shown a knife and talked about previous violent incidents.
Mr Hearn told the court that Corrigan was the aggressor and that the attack was both unprovoked and senseless, urging the jury to consider it an act of murder.
Defence Says There Was No Intent to Kill
Corrigan denies murder charges. His defence lawyer, Jane Osborne KC, told the court that the knife was carried for protection. She argued that Corrigan believed Mr Algasim was acting aggressively and that he intended only to scare him, not to cause fatal harm.
According to the defence, Corrigan did not realise he had struck Mr Algasim with the knife.

The trial is ongoing, and further evidence and testimony are expected in the coming hearings.
