A 24-year-old British man is among 19 people who were killed after a tourist bus crashed in central Nepal, police have confirmed.

The bus was travelling from the popular tourist city of Pokhara to the capital, Kathmandu, when it lost control early on Monday morning. Authorities said the vehicle plunged approximately 200 metres down an embankment onto the banks of the Trishuli River in Dhading district.

There were 44 people on board, including the driver. Seventeen passengers died at the scene, while two others later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Twenty-five people were injured in the accident and have been taken to hospitals in Kathmandu for treatment.

Police spokesperson Abinarayan Kafle said nine of the victims have so far been formally identified. Among the injured are a Chinese national and a New Zealander. Officials are continuing efforts to identify the remaining victims and notify their families.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation. The UK Foreign Office has been contacted for comment regarding the British national who died in the incident.

Road accidents are relatively common in Nepal, where mountainous terrain, narrow highways and poor road maintenance contribute to frequent crashes. In 2024, at least 14 people were killed when a bus travelling along a similar route fell into the Marsyangdi River in Tanahun district.

Authorities have pledged a full investigation as rescue and recovery operations continue.
