Russia Expels British Diplomat Over Alleged Espionage Activities

Russia has ordered a British diplomat to leave the country within two weeks after accusing him of engaging in espionage, according to statements reported by Russian media. The country’s security agency, the Federal Security Service or FSB, said it uncovered what it described as an undeclared intelligence presence linked to the diplomat, identified in several reports as Gareth Samuel Davies. Served as a second secretary at the British embassy in Moscow, the 45-year-old official is accused by the successor to the Soviet-era KGB of involvement in intelligence-gathering operations that posed a threat to Russia’s national security. According to the agency, the diplomat allegedly attempted to obtain sensitive information related to Russia’s economy during informal meetings, with officials characterizing these efforts as both intelligence and subversive activities.

The expulsion marks another significant strain in diplomatic relations between Moscow and London, which have remained at a historical low following mutual accusations of espionage and political interference since the invasion of Ukraine. While the British Foreign Office has previously dismissed such allegations as malicious and baseless, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Britain's charge d'affaires, Danae Dholakia, to issue a strong protest and a warning of a decisive mirror response should London choose to escalate the situation further. This latest move follows the expulsion of at least nine other British diplomats since 2024 on similar grounds.

The diplomatic fallout comes just days after Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced that British commandos will now be authorized to board and halt Russia’s shadow fleet vessels as they pass through UK waters. Speaking at a Joint Expeditionary Force summit in Helsinki, the prime minister stated that the UK would join northern European allies in intercepting the tankers in an attempt to go after the sanction-breaking ships even harder. Moscow’s shadow fleet is reported to be made up of more than a thousand ageing tankers that illicitly ship oil and other goods out of Russia by flying the flags of other countries to evade Western sanctions.

Heightened maritime tensions were underscored on Thursday when a crude oil tanker named Liteyny Prospect, which is currently on the UK sanctions list, was located off the Sussex coast. While a government spokesperson declined to comment on specific operational planning to avoid compromising the ability of law enforcement and military specialists to take action, the authorization marks the first time British forces have been given the green light for such interdictions. British forces have already been involved in tracking these vessels for several years and recently supported the United States in the seizure of the oil tanker Marinera, formerly known as the Bella-1, in the Atlantic.
