Donald Trump has assured that King Charles III will be “very safe” during his upcoming state visit to the United States, which begins Monday.

The assurance follows renewed security discussions between the White House and Buckingham Palace after a recent security scare in Washington DC, where a gunman managed to access an event attended by the US president.

Speaking to CBS’ 60 Minutes, Trump emphasized that the White House grounds are highly secure and capable of ensuring the monarch’s safety throughout the visit.

Despite the incident, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the King and Queen Camilla will proceed with their planned programme. The UK government hopes the visit will help ease current diplomatic tensions between the two allies.

The four-day visit will begin in Washington DC, where the royal couple will be welcomed by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. The itinerary also includes events in New York and Virginia, including a symbolic visit to the 9/11 Memorial.

UK Ambassador to the US, Sir Christian Turner, said the visit aims to “renew and revitalise” the historic ties between the UK and the US, focusing on shared values, security cooperation, and economic partnership.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has also spoken with Trump ahead of the visit, signaling continued diplomatic engagement despite recent disagreements, particularly over US policies involving Iran.

The visit comes at a sensitive time, with Trump having previously criticised the UK government’s stance on international conflicts. However, both sides are hopeful the royal visit will reinforce long-standing ties beyond political differences.

The highlight of the trip will be King Charles’ address to the US Congress, where he is expected to strike a balance between diplomatic neutrality and reinforcing UK interests.

While some UK politicians have criticised the visit, others have backed it, saying it remains an important gesture of international diplomacy and cooperation.
