Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, has been elected President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), securing 99 votes from the 193 UN member states and defeating Cyprus’ candidate, who received 91 votes.

The victory marks a major diplomatic achievement for Bangladesh and reflects growing international confidence in the country’s role in multilateral diplomacy, global cooperation, sustainable development, and international peace and security.

Despite having only three months to conduct an intensive campaign, Bangladesh successfully rallied support through extensive diplomatic outreach led by Dr. Khalilur Rahman and the country’s foreign missions worldwide. The government credited the achievement to the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, coordinated diplomatic efforts, and Dr. Rahman’s international reputation and experience.

The election is being celebrated as a significant recognition of Bangladesh’s increasing global influence and commitment to strengthening multilateralism and representing the interests of developing nations on the world stage.
