  • IOPC Probes London Police Chase Crash After Unborn Baby Dies

An Independent Office for Police Conduct watchdog investigation is underway following a devastating South London pursuit collision that resulted in the death of an unborn child.

Independent Watchdog Intervenes in Fatal Pursuit Investigation

The statutory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) marks the next critical phase of the investigation into the high-speed deployment. Under standard protocol, the independent watchdog must review the actions of the pursuing officers whenever a tactical pursuit culminates in a fatality or catastrophic injury. Investigators will scrutinise whether the tactical pursuit complied with strict emergency driving guidelines, evaluating the risk assessments made by the officers in the lead-up to the impact on Lewisham Way.

The collision occurred at approximately 11:30 pm on Saturday, June 13, when a vehicle with suspected cloned number plates failed to stop for officers in New Cross. During the ensuing pursuit, the suspect vehicle collided heavily with an oncoming car containing a young couple in their 20s. Paramedics rushed the heavily pregnant passenger to hospital, where medical staff confirmed that her baby had died. The woman remains in hospital in a stable condition, while her partner was treated for minor injuries.

A 29-year-old man arrested at the scene remains under heavy guard in hospital while being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit confirmed he faces multiple severe criminal charges, including causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, vehicle theft, failing to stop, and possession of Class A drugs. Legal experts note that the prosecution will focus heavily on forensic collision data and vehicle telemetry to establish the exact dynamics of the crash.

Met Police Appeal for Public Telemetry and Dashcam Footage

The Metropolitan Police are now focusing on reconstructing the timeline preceding the intervention. Speaking to journalists, Detective Inspector Suzanne Quinton, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, expressed deep condolences while appealing for public cooperation. "Our thoughts are with the mother and father involved, and their family following the tragic loss of their child," Quinton stated. "Our investigation continues. We would ask anyone with information or footage that could help to please come forward."

As Daily Dazzling Dawn continues to monitor the unfolding legal proceedings, forensic teams are reviewing street surveillance, emergency service radio transmissions, and local dashcam footage. Members of the public who witnessed the incident or hold relevant digital evidence on Lewisham Way have been urged to contact investigators immediately on 101, quoting reference CAD 8670/13JUN.
