GB News pundit Charged with Parliamentary Expense Fraud

The legal integrity of the British parliamentary standards system faces fresh scrutiny following confirmation that prominent political commentator Matthew Torbitt has been charged with fraud by false representation.

The Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that the 35-year-old pundit, a ubiquitous presence across major broadcast networks, was charged by post on 9 June. The charges follow a comprehensive investigation initiated in April last year after authorities received a report concerning the unauthorized procurement of services via Westminster’s travel booking systems.

According to official statements, Torbitt faces two counts of fraud by false representation. The prosecution alleges that between August 2022 and September 2024, Torbitt utilized the parliamentary travel system to obtain free rail tickets for journeys that did not relate to official parliamentary business. A second charge details an alleged offense on 2 October 2024, involving a fraudulent claim for the reimbursement of travel and accommodation expenses. Because expenses for the staff of Members of Parliament are sustained by public funds, the allegations have triggered wider discussions regarding the oversight of secondary access to Westminster resources.

The focus of the case now shifts entirely to the judiciary. Torbitt, who currently resides in Didcot, Oxfordshire, is formally scheduled to make his initial appearance at Thames Magistrates’ Court on 27 July. Legal experts note that this preliminary hearing will dictate the future trajectory of the case, including the formal entering of pleas and decisions regarding whether the matter will be allocated to the Crown Court for trial. As the judicial process is now active, strict legal protections restrict further public speculation regarding the details of the evidence to ensure a fair trial.

Torbitt’s professional trajectory has long been intertwined with the political establishment. Originally from Stockport, Greater Manchester, he initially gained prominence by publicly sharing his personal experiences of overcoming homelessness, subsequently positioning himself as a vocal advocate on social issues. His background led to high-profile appointments, including being named a senior fellow at the Centre for Social Justice and an ambassador for Alcohol Change UK.

His political career includes advisory and shadow roles with various MPs between 2018 and 2024. Investigative details compiled by Daily Dazzling Dawn highlight his early political associations, including a 2014 Westminster internship shadowing Andy Burnham, who recently returned to Parliament following the Makerfield by-election. While Torbitt has remained a highly visible public supporter of Burnham, officials emphasize he holds no current or formal role within any parliamentary team.

With the first court date set for late July, the proceedings are expected to draw significant attention to the mechanisms governing parliamentary oversight and the strict boundaries regulating taxpayer-funded resources.
