A 36-year-old man accused of stabbing a construction worker in the head with a screwdriver at a housing development near Swindon has formally entered a not guilty plea to causing grievous bodily harm with intent. James Denys, residing at Ravensdale in East Wichel, Swindon, appeared before Swindon Crown Court in Wiltshire where he denied the Section 18 offence in connection with an alleged violent incident on 23 July at the Widham Gardens building site in Purton.
The defendant is accused of launching a severe assault on 25-year-old Jamie Chappell, a construction operative from Bristol, who was left with catastrophic and life-changing head injuries. Emergency services, including specialist medical crews, rushed to the residential development—managed by developer Wain Homes—at around 11:00 BST following reports of an altercation. Co-workers and the site manager immediately rendered emergency first aid at the scene prior to the arrival of paramedics, an intervention credited by the victim's loved ones with preserving his life during the critical initial moments.

Following the assault, Mr Chappell was rushed to Southmead Hospital in Bristol, a regional major trauma centre, in a critical and life-threatening condition. Specialist neurosurgeons performed an emergency five-hour surgical procedure to alleviate pressure on his brain, during which medics had to remove a significant portion of his skull. The penetrating tool caused severe trauma to the left hemisphere of his brain, leaving him under intensive hospital care and facing extensive neurological rehabilitation.

During the Crown Court plea and trial preparation hearing, Denys maintained his innocence against the single indictment of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861. His legal representatives confirmed that the defence case completely refutes unlawful wrongdoing in relation to the events at Widham Gardens.
The presiding judge remanded Denys in continuing custody ahead of a full jury trial, which has been scheduled to commence at Swindon Crown Court on 11 January. Wiltshire Police have renewed their appeal for any remaining witnesses who were working near or visiting the Purton site during the morning of 23 July to provide statements to the ongoing investigation team.
