Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a house fire near Middlesbrough left two people dead, including a child.
Cleveland Police said officers were called to a property in the Grangetown area at around 5.20am on Wednesday after reports of a fire.
A child was among the two people who died in the blaze. Police said the victims have not yet been formally identified.
A 48-year-old woman remains in a critical condition at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), while three other people suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening. They are receiving treatment in hospital.
Police have arrested two men, aged 23 and 31, in connection with the incident. Both remain in police custody as investigators continue their inquiries.
Officers said they are keeping an "open mind" about the circumstances surrounding the fire and have not ruled out possible links to wider organised crime.
A detailed examination of the scene on Birchington Avenue is continuing as investigators work to establish exactly how the fire started and what led to the deaths.
The blaze happened around two miles (3km) from the site of a major crash on the A66 over the weekend. Seven people, including two police officers, were killed in that incident.
Redcar and Cleveland Local Policing Commander Superintendent Emily Harrison said police were continuing to investigate the "tragic incident" while supporting the families of those who died.
She said officers were working to establish the full circumstances and would continue to keep an open mind, including regarding any possible connection to wider organised crime.
Police said a high-visibility presence would remain in the Grangetown area while the investigation continues, both to support the inquiry and reassure local residents affected by the tragedy.
Images from the scene showed the roof of one of the houses had been severely damaged by the fire and was partly collapsing. Firefighters were later seen damping down the smoking roof of the property.
Cleveland Fire Brigade said six fire engines and the Incident Command Unit were sent to deal with the blaze.
Cleveland Police said the families of those involved had been informed and were being supported by specially trained officers. A heavy police presence was also maintained around the scene.
