Mum and Two Daughters Killed in California Wrong-Way Highway Crash

Vanessa Wetmore, 41, and her daughters Kylie, 20, and Kloie, 16, were killed after a wrong-way driver collided with their car on California’s Highway 99 near Bakersfield as they travelled home from a concert celebrating Kloie’s upcoming 17th birthday.

The three family members were pronounced dead at the scene after their Honda was struck shortly after midnight on Sunday, 16 August, north of Seventh Standard Road. The collision caused the family’s vehicle to become engulfed in flames before emergency services arrived.

Investigators are continuing to examine how a BMW came to be travelling in the wrong direction on the busy California highway and whether alcohol or drugs may have played a role. No criminal charges had been filed as the investigation continued.

The journey had followed what was meant to be a joyful weekend for the Wetmore family. Vanessa, Kylie and Kloie had travelled to Fresno to watch Thee Sacred Souls, La Lom and The Womack Sisters perform as an early celebration for Kloie, whose 17th birthday was only four days away.

Her birthday was also particularly significant for the family because it fell on the same day as her brother Seth, who is also 16.

What began as a family celebration ended in an unimaginable loss as the three made their way home towards Bakersfield.

The driver of the BMW was later identified by authorities as 44-year-old Jamie Rodriguez, of Tulare. He suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Two people travelling in a Chevrolet involved in the wider incident sustained minor injuries.

Investigators are now working to establish where the BMW entered Highway 99 and how long it may have been travelling against the direction of traffic before the fatal collision.

Authorities are also examining whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the incident. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation, and no criminal charges have been announced.

Dale Schoettler, who organised the appeal, told journalists that the response from supporters would help remove some of the immediate financial pressures facing the teenager and his wider family.

An update shared with supporters expressed gratitude for the messages and donations received following the deaths of Vanessa, Kloie and Kylie.

The organiser said the support would allow Seth to concentrate on grieving and spending time with those closest to him rather than worrying about his immediate future.

The fundraising appeal said no financial contribution could change the scale of the family’s loss, but that the support offered by the community would provide important stability in the difficult months ahead.

Kloie Wetmore was a senior at Centennial High School in Bakersfield and played for the school’s Golden Hawks softball team.

Following her death, the team paid tribute to her contribution both on and off the field, saying her presence would not be forgotten.

The Golden Hawks described Kloie as someone who would remain part of the team’s identity and memory.

Tributes have also focused on the close relationship between Vanessa and her daughters, with the fundraising appeal stressing that the three victims were far more than names associated with a tragic road collision.

The appeal remembered them as a mother, daughters, sisters, relatives and friends who were deeply loved and expected to return home after a night of music and celebration.
