A police officer is receiving hospital treatment after being shot in Nottingham city centre, police have confirmed.
Nottinghamshire Police said the officer approached two suspects on Angel Row shortly before the shooting took place at 04:50 BST on Sunday.
The officer sustained a gunshot wound to his foot and is now being treated in hospital, the force said.
Detectives confirmed that a firearm was recovered at the scene. Two suspects, a man and a woman, reportedly fled the area following the incident.
Angel Row remains closed, with a large police cordon and an extensive investigation underway at the scene.
Assistant Chief Constable Claire Rukas, of Nottinghamshire Police, described the incident as shocking and highlighted the potential dangers police officers face while carrying out their duties to protect the public.
She said: "This is a shocking incident and a sobering reminder of the potential dangers faced by officers as they work to protect and serve the public.
"As we investigate what happened and work to apprehend the individuals involved, my thoughts today are with the injured officer, his family and colleagues.
"I also ask that anyone with additional information shares this with us without delay. Even the smallest bit of information could make all the difference to this investigation."
Journalist Viraj Soni, who is reporting from the scene, said several marked police vehicles were parked along the road, which is lined with fast-food outlets and other shops.
He also reported that orange traffic cones had been placed along the road beside items left at the scene.
The police cordon has also been extended to St James's Street, where an officer is standing guard as investigations continue.
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could help identify the two suspects to contact them without delay.
