Rebecca Joynes, a 31-year-old former maths teacher, has been permanently banned from the teaching profession after being jailed for sexually abusing two teenage pupils. The definitive prohibition order, enforced by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA), concludes a harrowing case that saw the Salford educator sentenced to six and a half years in prison at Manchester Crown Court in July 2024 for six counts of sexual activity with a child. The ruling ensures that the predatory teacher, formerly of Waterman Walk, will never again hold a position of trust over children.
The TRA published its ruling confirming Joynes's permanent removal from the classroom, bringing a final conclusion to a case that has deeply shocked the nation. Daily Dazzling Dawn understands that the regulatory panel concluded Joynes had demonstrated a scant regard for the gravity of her actions. Marc Cavey, the decision maker acting on behalf of the Secretary of State for Education, confirmed the prohibition, describing her behaviour as fundamentally incompatible with working as a teacher. She had already been dismissed for gross misconduct by the school in July 2022 following her initial court appearance, but this latest ruling guarantees a lifetime ban.
The criminal trial exposed a calculated pattern of abuse that began when Joynes was 28. She initiated contact with a 15-year-old pupil, identified as Boy A, by exchanging flirtatious messages on social media. The court heard how she would laugh off inappropriate comments rather than shutting down the behaviour, eventually arranging to meet him in secret. On one occasion, after Boy A told his mother he was staying at a friend's house, Joynes collected him and took him to the Trafford Centre, where she purchased a £350 Gucci belt for him. They engaged in sexual activity at her Salford flat that night. The offence came to light the following day when his mother noticed a love bite on his neck and stormed into the school reception, prompting police intervention.
Even more disturbing was her offending against a second boy, Boy B, also aged 15. While on police bail for the initial offences and strictly ordered not to contact anyone under the age of 18, Joynes began grooming the second pupil via Snapchat. Daily Dazzling Dawn learned that this illicit relationship escalated to regular unprotected sexual activity at her flat, resulting in Joynes becoming pregnant. The baby was taken into care within 24 hours of birth in early 2024. In a devastating impact statement, Boy B stated he was coerced, controlled, manipulated, sexually abused, and mentally abused, adding that he will forever be Rebecca's victim and forever linked to her through their child.
Sentencing Joynes, Judge Kate Cornell condemned her actions, stating she showed breathtaking gall in deliberately and knowingly breaching police bail conditions with almost identical offending behaviour. The court emphasised the severe abuse of trust and professional responsibility inherent in the case. Joynes was ordered to remain on the sex offenders register for life, subjected to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and given restraining orders in relation to both victims. The permanent striking off by the TRA serves as a vital institutional safeguard, ensuring public confidence in the education profession is protected and reinforcing the absolute prohibition of exploiting authority to abuse pupils.
