Airports and Ferry Ports on High Alert as Gardaí Hunt Jamey Carney Murder Suspect

Irish authorities have expanded their search for a suspect following the killing of 43-year-old Jamey Carney in County Kerry, with security measures strengthened at airports, ferry terminals, and border crossings amid concerns the man may attempt to leave the island.

Investigators believe the suspect, a 28-year-old man who had applied for international protection in Ireland and was known to Ms. Carney, remains somewhere on the island. According to reports, police suspect he may be trying to escape through Northern Ireland before traveling by ferry to Britain and potentially onward to Turkey, where he is believed to have lived before arriving in Ireland via France.

To prevent any possible escape, authorities in the Republic of Ireland are closely monitoring ports and airports, while the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is assisting by keeping watch at transport hubs in Northern Ireland, including Belfast's airport and ferry terminal.

An Garda Síochána confirmed on Wednesday that the case has officially been upgraded to a murder investigation following the completion of a post-mortem examination by State Pathologist Dr. Linda Mulligan. Police have not disclosed the findings of the examination, citing operational reasons.

The crime scene at Ms. Carney's home on Muckross Road in Killarney remains sealed while forensic specialists continue their examination. A senior investigating officer has been appointed, and a dedicated incident room has been established at Killarney Garda Station to coordinate the investigation.

Investigators believe Ms. Carney was fatally assaulted late Monday night or during the early hours of Tuesday morning. Her body is thought to have remained undiscovered for more than 12 hours before she was found.

Authorities acknowledge that this delay may have provided the suspect with significant time to travel away from Killarney before police were alerted.

The alarm was raised shortly after 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday when Ms. Carney's 13-year-old daughter became concerned after being unable to reach her mother. She contacted a family friend, who then alerted another acquaintance that immediately contacted Gardaí.

Emergency responders arrived at the home, where Ms. Carney was pronounced dead.

Investigators believe her body had been covered with a duvet, and sources indicate she suffered severe head injuries consistent with a prolonged and violent assault.

According to investigators, the man being sought had been living at an International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS) centre in Killarney since 2024. Police believe he knew Ms. Carney personally and occasionally stayed at her residence.

Witnesses have also reported hearing an argument involving Ms. Carney and a man at her home on Monday evening, which detectives believe may be linked to the fatal attack.

Gardaí continue to appeal for anyone who was in the Muckross Road area between 11:00 p.m. on July 6 and 5:00 a.m. on July 7 to come forward with any information or video footage, including CCTV or dashcam recordings.

Authorities say the investigation remains active as officers work to trace the suspect and establish the full circumstances surrounding Ms. Carney's death.

Originally from New York, Ms. Carney had been living in Killarney for several years. Just days before her death, she shared an Independence Day message with fellow Americans on social media, making news of her killing even more heartbreaking for family and friends on both sides of the Atlantic.
