As millions of pilgrims gather at the Grand Mosque for the peak Umrah season during Ramadan, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior has introduced a set of regulations aimed at ensuring the safety, security, and comfort of worshippers in Mecca.
Announced on Sunday, these measures seek to streamline access to the Grand Mosque while maintaining the sanctity of the holy site amid the surge in visitors. Officials emphasized that the guidelines are part of ongoing efforts to provide a smooth and spiritually enriching experience for all.
One of the key regulations includes a strict ban on weapons and sharp objects within the Grand Mosque and its courtyards. Additionally, authorities have prohibited collecting donations, bringing motorcycles or bicycles into the central Haram area, and engaging in activities that may disrupt the spiritual atmosphere, such as smoking, begging, or unauthorized selling within mosque premises.
Worshippers have also been advised not to bring personal luggage or leave belongings in the courtyards or near mosque windows. Hanging bags or other items from mosque windows is now strictly forbidden. To preserve the tranquility of key rituals, the ministry has discouraged any behaviors that could disturb others during Tawaf (circumambulation), Sa’i (walking between Safa and Marwah), or prayer.
Beyond behavioral regulations, the ministry has also provided logistical instructions for pilgrims traveling to the Grand Mosque. Clear guidelines have been issued for those arriving via public transport, including the Haramain High-Speed Railway, shuttle buses, taxis, and private vehicles. The guidance also includes updated details on designated parking areas inside and outside Mecca.
To assist with navigation and ease of movement, digital signs have been installed at entrances and throughout the mosque’s courtyards, displaying information on available Tawaf areas and designated routes. Additionally, safety recommendations and precautionary advice have been provided to help pilgrims perform their rituals peacefully and securely.
