Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has signed a new two-year deal with the club, extending his stay beyond the end of the season when his previous contract was due to expire.

The 33-year-old defender follows Mohamed Salah, who also recently agreed to a two-year extension, in reaffirming his commitment to the Reds.

"It was always going to be Liverpool," Van Dijk said, despite speculation linking him to a move to Paris St-Germain. "That was always in my mind—it was the plan from the start."

Appointed captain in 2023 after Jordan Henderson’s exit, Van Dijk has made 314 appearances since joining Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for £75 million. During his time at Anfield, he has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Club World Cup, and two EFL Cups.

"There was never any doubt this was the right place for me and my family," he said. "Someone recently called me an adopted Scouser, and I take great pride in that. To continue this journey for another two years is an amazing feeling."

Under new Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who is also Dutch, Van Dijk has been instrumental as the team pushes toward a potential 20th English league title—a feat that would tie Manchester United’s record.

In March, Van Dijk admitted uncertainty over his future, but by early April, talks had reportedly made headway, leading to the new agreement.

With Salah and Van Dijk now signed on, attention turns to Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contract is set to expire in July. The England international, recently back in training after a month-long injury, has been linked with Real Madrid, and his future remains uncertain.
