A total of 21 well-known London landmarks have been newly added to Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register for 2025, marking them as officially “at risk.” Among them is the much-loved Hampstead Hill Pergola, a popular photo spot for tourists.
These sites are part of 604 London entries now considered vulnerable to neglect, decay, or unsuitable development. The Register aims to protect such heritage assets so that they can continue to be preserved and enjoyed in the years ahead.
Built in 1906 as part of a private Edwardian estate, the Pergola has become one of Hampstead Heath’s most admired features. However, its ageing structure has placed it at risk. The City of London Corporation, which manages the site, has promised to take measures to secure its future.
Also joining the list is the Conservatory at Chiswick House and Gardens in Hounslow. Dating back to 1813, the glass-and-timber structure has been restored several times, but the 1930s additions are proving difficult to maintain. Hounslow Council and the Chiswick House & Gardens Trust are collaborating on plans to ensure the Conservatory’s long-term preservation. A recent Trust-led project has already converted nearby Victorian workspaces into artists’ studios, which opened earlier this year.
Despite the new additions, 20 London sites have been successfully rescued. These include the Leaning Woman Statue in Hammersmith—restored through a crowdfunding initiative led by the Heritage of London Trust—and a Grade II-listed former weavers’ cottage in Shoreditch, which was saved from dereliction and transformed into a modern retail space after years on the at-risk list.
