Families can cut their heating bills by hundreds of pounds with just a few simple adjustments at home. According to experts at Electric Radiators Direct, even small habit changes can lead to significant savings.

Heating and energy specialist Stephen Hankinson highlighted that one of the biggest ways to reduce energy costs is to ensure your heating is switched off when you're not at home. For instance, if you normally get back from work around 6pm, you can set your heating to come on just before you arrive.

He also offered advice on when heating should be used. Hankinson explained: “If you're going out for an evening or away for a couple of days, update your heating schedule so you're not warming an empty home.

If you're travelling during winter or leaving for several days, keep the heating at a low level or set it to turn on intermittently. This helps prevent frozen pipes while still keeping costs down.”

Modern smart features can also help manage energy use more efficiently. Hankinson noted that many electric heaters now include WiFi controls, allowing you to adjust your heating from anywhere. So, if you forget to switch off the heater in your home office when you step out, you can turn it off remotely using your phone.

Save £270 a year by adjusting your thermostat

He pointed out that a simple thermostat adjustment could save households around £270 a year. Hankinson said: *“Lowering your thermostat is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce your bills.

If your heating is set to reach 22°C daily, you probably won’t feel much difference lowering it slightly. Based on current average usage, reducing it from 21°C to 18°C can save around £270 annually.”*

He suggested trying a one-degree reduction for a week to see how comfortable it feels.

Hankinson added that turning the heating off at night is also a smart habit: “It’s far more cost-efficient to switch heating off during the night. A warm duvet or an extra blanket is usually enough to keep you comfortable.”
