The West Midlands’ worst speeding hotspots have now been exposed — and the numbers are staggering.
Almost 100,000 drivers have received speeding fines this year after being caught on residential 30mph roads. The figures highlight how widespread speeding has become across the region, especially considering most roads do not have permanent speed cameras.
According to data obtained by BirminghamLive through a freedom of information request, 99,416 motorists were detected driving between 30mph and 39mph in 2025. These offenders were typically caught by fixed roadside cameras or mobile police enforcement teams operating from camera vans.
The revelation comes at a crucial time, with more than 25 major routes in Birmingham set to have their speed limits reduced from 40mph to 30mph in the new year. Local officials have said that soon the majority of roads across the city will have a 30mph limit.
Speeding wasn’t limited to low-level offences either. Another 61,943 drivers were caught travelling between 40mph and 49mph, while 28,410 were clocked between 50mph and 59mph.
Thousands more were fined for even higher speeds, many likely on motorways. This included 6,169 drivers travelling between 80mph and 89mph, and 929 caught between 90mph and 99mph.
A small number were caught driving at extremely dangerous speeds—over 100mph. The most shocking cases involved two vehicles recorded between 150mph and 159mph, making them the fastest drivers caught in the region this year.
