6.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Papua New Guinea

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea on Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was located about 26 miles northeast of Goroka, with the quake occurring at a depth of roughly 68 miles at 10:31 a.m. UTC (5:31 a.m. ET).

The USGS issued a green alert, indicating a low risk of casualties and economic damage, largely due to the remote location of the tremor despite its strength.

The earthquake occurred along the western boundary of the Australia–Pacific tectonic plates, where the Pacific Plate is slowly subducting southward beneath New Guinea at the New Guinea Trench, the USGS noted.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, several earthquakes shook southern Japan, a region known for frequent seismic activity. Authorities reported no major injuries or significant structural damage, and no tsunami warning was issued.

Additionally, a series of earthquakes were recorded just north of Nemuro, Japan, extending into Russian territory.
