Millions of UK Drivers Face Higher Fines for Driving Without Valid Car Insurance

Millions of motorists across the UK could soon face tougher penalties for driving without valid car insurance — even if they don’t realise they are uninsured.

Under proposals outlined in the Government’s newly released Road Safety Strategy, the fine for driving without insurance could be increased significantly. At present, the offence carries a £300 fine and six penalty points, but the new plans suggest the fine could be doubled to £600.

Research by MoneySuperMarket highlights why this change could affect so many drivers. The study found that around 4% of UK motorists — roughly 1.6 million people — do not realise their car insurance policy has an expiry date. As a result, many could unintentionally break the law and face harsher punishment.

Alicia Hempsted, a car insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, warned that the consequences go far beyond an initial fine. She said many drivers are unaware they could end up with an IN10 conviction, which can dramatically increase insurance costs. On average, drivers with an IN10 pay £1,570 a year for cover — more than double the UK average premium of £766. She urged motorists to check their policy documents or contact their insurer if they are unsure when their cover ends.

Meanwhile, motoring experts have also shared advice on how drivers can reduce the cost of their insurance amid rising premiums. With prices increasing sharply for both new and existing drivers, choosing the right time to renew a policy can make a big difference.

Ryan Fulthorpe from Go Compare explained that drivers can purchase a new policy up to 29 days before their current one expires and secure the quoted price. According to Go Compare data, leaving renewal until the last day is the most expensive option. Customers who bought their insurance around 27 days early saved an average of 44% compared to those who renewed on the due date — a potential saving of £191 if premiums match the national average.

Fulthorpe stressed that while many factors affecting insurance prices can’t easily be changed, renewing early is a simple and effective way to cut costs. Being informed and planning ahead, he said, can help drivers avoid unnecessary expenses at a time when many are looking to save money.
