Storm Chandra to Batter UK With Heavy Rain, Strong Winds and Snow

A powerful weather system set to deliver strong winds, heavy rainfall and snow to large parts of the UK on Tuesday has been officially named Storm Chandra by the Met Office.

Forecasters warn that flooding and widespread travel disruption are likely, while significant snowfall is expected over higher ground in northern regions. An amber rain warning is in force for southwest England on Monday and Tuesday.

Additional yellow rain warnings cover much of England — including London, the South East and South West — as well as parts of Wales and Northern Ireland on Monday.

Conditions are expected to deteriorate further on Tuesday as Storm Chandra strengthens, prompting a broad range of weather alerts across the country. An amber wind warning has been issued for Northern Ireland, with gusts forecast between 60 and 70mph, potentially reaching 75mph in exposed coastal areas.

Met Office chief forecaster Paul Gundersen described the situation as a “complex spell of weather” driven by a deep low-pressure system, urging the public to keep checking the latest warnings.

He said strong winds would initially affect the Isles of Scilly, western Cornwall and southwest Wales — areas still recovering from Storm Goretti — where gusts of 70 to 80mph are possible. Heavy rain will also pose a risk, particularly over already saturated ground in Dorset and parts of Devon, Somerset and Cornwall.

As colder air moves in from the north, snow will become an increasing threat, with 10–20cm potentially building up across higher elevations in the Pennines, southern Scotland and the Scottish Highlands.

Yellow warnings for rain and snow have also been issued for parts of Scotland, the Midlands, North East, North West and Yorkshire on Tuesday. Further yellow rain alerts apply to London, southern England and parts of Wales.

The Met Office has cautioned residents to prepare for possible flooding, transport delays, power outages and landslides in vulnerable areas.

Storm Chandra follows Storm Ingrid, which caused damage across southwest England last Friday and Saturday, and comes shortly after Storm Goretti, which earlier this month brought snow, rain and strong winds to many parts of the UK.

The storm has been named according to the shared alphabetical naming system used by the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands, with Storm David set to be the next named system. Some recent storms were named by overseas weather agencies, including Meteo France, which named Storm Goretti, and Portuguese authorities, who named Storm Ingrid.
