Justice for Yasmin: The 'Phantom' Driver Who Tore a Family Apart

A manhunt is underway for the driver of a dark SUV after police confirmed they are investigating a fatal M11 collision as a potential case of causing death by dangerous driving.

The investigation into the death of beloved teaching assistant Yasmin Begum, 38, has taken a critical turn following evidence from a surviving passenger and data recovered from the vehicle. The mother-of-two was a passenger in a red Audi A3 that left the southbound carriageway near Harlow and overturned just before 1 am on February 4.

In a heartbreaking twist, it has emerged that Yasmin’s husband, also 38, was her lifelong partner; the pair were school classmates who grew up together. He is now left to care for their two children alone as he recovers from the shock of the tragedy.

The "Phantom" Vehicle

Detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are urgently searching for the driver of a dark-coloured SUV—described as a Range Rover, BMW X5, or similar model—who failed to stop at the scene. Witness accounts describe the SUV driving erratically and forcing the Audi to take evasive action moments before the crash.

Evidence and Appeals

Forensic experts have examined the Audi's event data recorder, which reportedly confirms extreme steering inputs and heavy braking consistent with reacting to an immediate hazard. Investigators are now scouring CCTV from Birchanger Green Services and ANPR data from the M11 corridor between 00:45 and 01:15 that night.

What Happens Next:

Police are appealing to motorists on the M11 southbound between Junctions 8 (Stansted) and 7 (Harlow) around the time of the collision.
