The clatter of hooves across Thomond Bridge signaled the arrival of a traditional horse-drawn glass carriage, marking the beginning of a poignant farewell to Scarlett Faulkner in Limerick City. Adorned with pink and white plumes, the carriage transported the late 29-year-old mother to St Munchin’s Church, where an aisle lined with cherry blossom trees awaited her remains. Hundreds of mourners, many dressed in pink to honour the young woman, stood in silence as her lilac casket was carried shoulder-high into the sanctuary.

The service was defined by a powerful eulogy delivered by Scarlett’s sister, Victoria Faulkner, who spoke of a life defined by laughter and devotion to her six-year-old daughter, Oceanne. Addressing the congregation, Victoria promised that her sister’s legacy would be one of accountability, stating that the family would "cherish every memory" while firmly vowing to secure justice for the tragic events of the past month. She described Scarlett as "Daddy’s girl and Mommy’s world," noting that despite the "big hole" left in their hearts, the young mother’s personality had touched countless lives.

Canon Dónal McNamara, the parish priest, led the liturgy with a challenging message of hope and reconciliation. He reminded those gathered that while the loss of a mother and daughter is a tragedy of "inhuman" proportions, the path forward must eventually involve the difficult journey of forgiveness. He emphasised that this call to peace does not excuse wrongdoing or deny pain, but serves to prevent a family from being consumed by anger. He urged the community to view young Oceanne as Scarlett’s greatest gift, a living bond that remains unchanged by death.

The visual tributes surrounding the church were as vibrant as the woman they honoured, featuring heart-shaped floral arrangements and gold-framed images of Scarlett in happier times. In a deeply personal touch, specific wreaths depicted items close to her heart, including designer accessories and her favorite refreshments. The family’s request for a dignified, alcohol-free service was strictly observed, ensuring the atmosphere remained focused on remembrance rather than the tensions that have shadowed the case since the roadside attack in Birdhill on March 21.

Justice and Tears: Limerick’s Final Farewell to ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Scarlett Faulkner

As the ceremony concluded, the strains of Celine Dion’s "Because You Loved Me" echoed through the church as the casket was moved to a traditional flatbed lorry for the final procession. Scarlett was taken to her final resting place at the family plot in Meelick Cemetery, Co. Clare. While the city returned to its daily rhythm, the investigation into the alleged assault continues, with two suspects remaining before the courts as Gardaí finalise their comprehensive file on the tragedy that has gripped the Mid-West.
