A horrific far-right terror plot targeting thousands of innocent families has been completely dismantled after Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) London launched a massive multi-agency dragnet, leading to the arrest of 12 suspects across England. The coordinated swoops came after intelligence uncovered a credible and potential serious threat explicitly directed toward the UK Ijtima event—a massive, peaceful annual Islamic gathering held at Shrubland Hall in Coddenham, Near Ipswich, Suffolk. Thanks to the fast actions of counter-terror networks, a major tragedy was averted, ensuring that all 15,000 Muslim attendees safely returned home to their families.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood praised the swift response, explicitly acknowledging the gravity of the threat and stating that the prompt police intervention undoubtedly saved lives. She emphasized that this is deeply concerning news for British Muslims and declared that the country must stand against hatred and unite around a shared belief in a nation that is open, generous, and tolerant to all communities.

The massive counter-terrorism investigation spans several regions across the UK, bringing to light an alarming cross-generational network of alleged extreme right-wing extremists ranging from young adults to an octogenarian. Police forces from London, the East, and Greater Manchester moved simultaneously on Sunday, 12 July, and Monday, 13 July, to cage the suspects. Eight of the men were detained directly under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and remain in police custody, while three other men were booked under the chilling charge of conspiracy to commit murder.

Among those actively in custody is a 48-year-old woman arrested in East London on Monday. She is facing severe charges on suspicion of assisting an offender, marking a crucial development in how the far-right network operated and hid within residential sectors. The East London operation also saw the Monday arrest of a 31-year-old man, which coincided with the arrest of a 33-year-old man in Southeast London, both held under terrorism warrants.

The largest concentration of suspects was found in Surrey, where five men were arrested in total. Three of these Surrey men—aged 55, 60, and 82 years old—were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder. The 82-year-old man has since been released on bail, while the 55-year-old and 60-year-old men remain tightly held in custody. The other two younger men from Surrey, aged 27 and 29, were detained under the Terrorism Act. Further arrests occurred on Sunday across England, including two 42-year-old men who were arrested in Essex, a 35-year-old man who was tracked down and arrested by regional counter-terrorism units in the Greater Manchester area, and a 27-year-old man who was intercepted locally in Ipswich to neutralize any immediate threat close to the venue.

The UK Ijtima, which ran from 9 to 13 July, is a peaceful celebration of community, spirituality, and unity. To ensure absolute safety, Suffolk Police advised the event organizers to bring the festival to a close slightly earlier than planned on Sunday morning. The situation was declared a major incident early on Sunday morning, triggering a multi-agency response from the Suffolk Resilience Forum to orchestrate a calm, safe, and properly coordinated departure for all 15,000 attendees. The major incident status was officially withdrawn on Monday.

Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of CTP London, sought to reassure a shaken but resilient Muslim community, acknowledging that this news is deeply concerning given that the intended target was an Islamic event. She stated that police will not hesitate to act against any potential threat, no matter who the target may be, and noted that while the event ended slightly earlier than planned, it passed off safely. Officers are currently conducting a number of searches at various addresses across the country linked to those arrested. Commander Flanagan added that this activity serves as a stark reminder that the threat level in the UK remains at severe, urging the public to stay vigilant. Assistant Chief Constable Alice Scott from Suffolk Constabulary, which is supporting the operation alongside CTP North West, CTP South East, and the Eastern Region Special Operational Unit, confirmed that extra visible police patrols have been deployed around Shrubland Hall and surrounding areas to reassure local communities that hate will never be allowed to win.
