Why Was Barrister Samreen Akhtar Jailed Over Gangland Revenge Plot?

A qualified criminal defence barrister who previously served as a national advocate for social mobility has been jailed for three years and three months after plotting a violent reprisal alongside an organised crime client. Samreen Akhtar, 38, was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court on Monday following an extensive inquiry conducted by West Yorkshire Police’s Economic Crime Unit. The conviction arose from events on 15 September 2021, when Akhtar conspired with convicted killer Tabish Ali to coordinate physical retribution against a rival gunman following an armed clash on Blacker Road in Huddersfield, Kirklees.

Instead of providing objective legal counsel, Akhtar actively advised her client on operational tactics to expose the assailant. Jurors heard how she suggested putting forward a ten thousand pound bounty to discover the gunman's precise location and proposed that Ali grant interviews to regional newspapers to amplify the search.

Transcripts disclosed during court proceedings revealed the precise nature of the planned violence. The trial heard that Akhtar urged Ali to exact physical vengeance, stating that once the target was located, they would inflict serious harm and send him back with broken legs to those who commissioned the attack. The confrontation formed part of a prolonged turf dispute between competing narcotics syndicates operating across West Yorkshire, an underworld conflict linked to multiple firearm deployments.
