At least 25 people have lost their lives after a devastating fire broke out at a nightclub in Goa, India, according to state police. The blaze is believed to have erupted around midnight on Saturday.

Most of those who died were reportedly employees of the club, though local media suggests that several tourists may also be among the victims. Footage circulating on social media showed emergency responders rushing to assist the injured, many of whom were transported to nearby hospitals.

Goa’s Chief Minister, Dr Pramod Sawant, expressed deep sorrow, saying: “I am profoundly saddened and extend my heartfelt condolences to the families enduring this unimaginable loss.”
He later confirmed that six people were injured in the incident and that all are in stable condition while receiving high-quality medical care.

Authorities worked throughout the night to contain the blaze, and all bodies have been recovered, the state’s police chief told reporters, as cited by Reuters.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the tragedy as “deeply saddening” and said he had spoken to the chief minister, assuring that the state government was offering all necessary support to the victims.

Dr Sawant, after inspecting the scene, announced that an inquiry has been launched to determine the cause of the fire and to assess whether fire safety regulations and building codes were adhered to.
“Anyone found negligent will face strict legal action,” he stated.

Goa, located along India’s western coastline, is one of the country’s most popular tourist hotspots, drawing millions of visitors annually.
