A growing number of once-popular baby names could be on the verge of extinction as parents increasingly turn toward new and modern naming trends, according to experts and newly released data from BabyCenter.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of parents register their newborns’ names on the BabyCenter app, providing a detailed snapshot of changing preferences. While some names continue to surge in popularity, many traditional, alternative-spelling, and location-inspired names are rapidly falling out of favour.

Traditional and Alternative Spellings Losing Popularity

The data shows a noticeable decline in classic girls’ names such as Sasha, Mia, Gabrielle, Danielle, Lilian, and Abby, while boys’ names including Dominick, Harry, Frank, and Bruce are also slipping down the rankings.

Parents are also moving away from non-traditional spellings of popular names. Variations like Charleigh, Alivia, Maddison, Emmitt, and Mohamad have seen sharp drops, suggesting a renewed preference for simpler or more conventional spellings.

Place Names and Certain Letter Trends Decline

Geographical names that were once fashionable are also losing appeal. For girls, names such as Malaysia, Dallas, and London are declining, while Boston is becoming less popular for boys.

In addition, boys’ names ending in the letter “y”, including Huxley, Grady, Rey, Corey, and Harry, are falling out of the top 1,000 rankings. Names beginning with the letters “D” or “K”, such as Danielle, Dylan, Kenna, Kinley, Dominic, Dev, Kylian, and Karim, are also seeing widespread declines across both genders.
