The Embassy of Algeria in Dhaka solemnly observed Algeria’s National Martyrs’ Day on Wednesday with a dignified ceremony attended by academics, journalists, business leaders, students, and distinguished guests from various sectors of Bangladesh.

The program commenced with the ceremonial hoisting of the Algerian national flag, followed by a minute of silence in tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Algeria’s independence and sovereignty. The gathering reflected a spirit of remembrance, solidarity, and shared historical consciousness.

Special prayers were offered by Mowlana Muhammad Anowarul Haque, invoking peace and blessings upon the souls of the martyrs. Guests also viewed a documentary film highlighting the historical significance of Algeria’s National Martyrs’ Day and the enduring legacy of those who fought for the country’s liberation.

In his keynote address, Ambassador Abdelouahab Saidani expressed profound respect and gratitude for the martyrs, describing their sacrifices as the moral foundation of Algeria’s sovereignty and national dignity. Delivering his remarks with deep reverence, he emphasized universal principles such as justice, human dignity, and the right of nations to determine their own destiny.

Referring to this year’s theme, “Faithful to the Martyrs' Pact,” the Ambassador underscored that remembrance must go beyond symbolic gestures. He noted that honoring the martyrs requires sustained commitment to progress, unity, and national development. He reflected on Algeria’s journey from colonial oppression to independence, highlighting how the sacrifices of the martyrs continue to guide the nation’s path forward.

Ambassador Saidani also recalled the international recognition of Algeria’s right to self-determination by the United Nations on February 18, 1957, describing it as a milestone in the country’s liberation struggle. He paid tribute to iconic figures of the Algerian revolution, including Larbi Ben M'hidi and Didouche Mourad, urging attendees to preserve their memory through truth, unity, and dedication to national progress.

The Ambassador highlighted Algeria’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding historical truth, mentioning the enactment of legislation criminalizing injustices committed during French colonial rule. He said such measures serve not only as a tribute to the martyrs but also as a foundation for building international relations grounded in mutual respect and historical acknowledgment.

Drawing parallels between Algeria and Bangladesh, Ambassador Saidani expressed admiration for the martyrs of Bangladesh and the shared values of resilience, sacrifice, and determination that unite the two nations. He stressed that honoring the memory of martyrs in both countries requires continued efforts toward peace, development, and social justice.

The observance concluded with a renewed affirmation of the “Martyrs' Pact,” symbolizing the enduring bond between past sacrifices and future aspirations. The ceremony stood as a moving reminder of the price of freedom and the responsibility of nations to uphold the ideals for which their heroes gave their lives.
