Mahendra Singh Dhoni is likely to miss the opening two weeks of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, according to an official statement from Chennai Super Kings on Saturday.

The veteran wicketkeeper-batter, who captained Chennai to five IPL titles before stepping down from leadership duties in 2024, has remained active solely in the IPL since retiring from international cricket in 2020. Despite being 44, Dhoni featured in all 14 matches for Chennai last season, contributing 196 runs, although the team ended at the bottom of the table.

The franchise confirmed that Dhoni is currently recovering from a calf strain and undergoing rehabilitation, which is expected to keep him out of action for the early phase of the tournament.

Chennai Super Kings are scheduled to begin their campaign against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on Monday. Meanwhile, the IPL season officially kicks off later on Saturday and will continue until May 31.

Dhoni’s temporary absence is likely to be a significant setback for Chennai as they look to bounce back after a disappointing previous season, having last lifted the trophy in 2023.
