  • Bangladeshi National Under Investigation Following Fatal Collision with British Author in Pattaya

The Pattaya City Police are leading a detailed investigation focused on a 38-year-old Bangladeshi national, Mr. Rana Mama, who was involved in a fatal road traffic collision that claimed the life of prominent British expatriate, author, and former honorary consul, Barry Kenyon, 84.

The tragic incident occurred at approximately 7:00 pm on Saturday, October 18, 2025, on the heavily-trafficked Thappraya Road. Mr. Kenyon, who had resided in Thailand for three decades, was attempting to cross the street to meet friends for dinner when he was struck by the motorbike, reportedly ridden by Mr. Mama.

Police confirmed that the British man, a revered member of the expat community and recipient of an MBE honour, was knocked to the ground a short distance from a central reservation and traffic lights. He was rushed to a local hospital but was later pronounced dead from his injuries.

Police Lieutenant Akrapong Saenputawong, the deputy investigation officer at the Pattaya City Police Station, provided a statement confirming the identities of those involved. He noted the initial findings:

Identities: The deceased was identified as Barry Kenyon, a British pedestrian. The motorbike rider was identified as Mr. Rana Mama, a Bangladeshi national.

Initial Circumstances: The collision occurred as Mr. Kenyon was crossing the road just as the traffic light was reportedly about to turn green, outside of a designated crosswalk.

Toxicology Report: Crucially, police confirmed that blood alcohol testing conducted immediately after the incident showed the Bangladeshi motorcyclist was not under the influence of alcohol.

The ongoing investigation is now centred on reviewing comprehensive CCTV footage from the surrounding area. The objective is to conclusively determine the sequence of events and the exact legal cause of the accident, which will dictate any potential charges against Mr. Rana Mama.

Victim Profile: A Community Figure

Barry Kenyon, a former police officer and headteacher, was a well-known figure in the expatriate community. He retired to Pattaya in 1995 and was instrumental in community life, serving as an honorary British consul and running the local bridge club (which gained notoriety in 2016 after being mistakenly raided as a gambling den by police).

Friends have paid tribute to the 84-year-old, describing him as a true gentleman. A friend, George Albert, remarked on Mr. Kenyon's standing: "Barry was known for his clarity and humour when discussing complex issues such as immigration and taxation. His deep understanding of Thai regulations and his ability to bridge cultural gaps earned him respect from both Thai authorities and expatriates."

Authorities have yet to confirm if any charges have been formally filed against Mr. Rana Mama as the investigation remains active. The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the traffic dangers in the coastal city, which is highly popular with foreign residents and tourists.
