16-Year-Old Boy Appears in Court Over Murder Charge

A 16-year-old boy has appeared before Omagh Magistrates’ Court charged with the murder of a 61-year-old man and the attempted murder of two other people following a serious incident at a house on Lisnahull Road in Dungannon, County Tyrone. The teenager, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was remanded in custody on Tuesday and is due to appear before Dungannon Youth Court on 15 September.

The body of the 61-year-old man was discovered at the property on Saturday morning. His eight-year-old daughter was also found injured at the house, while his 48-year-old wife suffered injuries described as non-life threatening.

The teenager faces additional allegations of making threats to kill. During his court appearance, he spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

During Tuesday's hearing, defence solicitor Jarlath Faloon raised concerns about the defendant's mental health, telling the court there were “clear concerns” surrounding his condition.

Mr Faloon said the teenager had been examined by a mental health nurse during the weekend but had not yet undergone an assessment at psychiatric level.

The judge subsequently ordered that a mental health assessment should be carried out before the case progresses further through the youth justice system.

The defendant was remanded in custody and will next appear at Dungannon Youth Court on 15 September, when the court will consider the next stages of the proceedings.
